I downloaded Spectrogram 5 yesterday and have done a few experiments with it. It seems that the best improvement is the custom colours on the display. This is not just the look of the thing - it is what colour or shade relates to what signal level.

The simplest improvement is to modify the existing linear colour scale and replace it with something more logarithmic. The reason is that we are much more interested in differentiating between noise and a signal a few dB apart, than we are in telling the difference between a strong signal and a very strong one.

My web site shows my first go at making this improvement. As with most improvements, it cannot produce a signal that was undetectable before but it does make very weak signals stand out more clearly.
