Hurricane Sandy hit here this past Monday and I am still without
electricity (since 2:30PM local time Monday).
My 136 kHz loop antenna is damaged but unable to tell if it is usable
or even if it has continuity.
My 60 meter dipole is wrapped around a tree that fell down.
I am relatively lucky.
My youngest brother lives in Staten Island, NY 1.5 miles (2.4km) from
the Atlantic Ocean. A storm surge brought in a flood of salt water
almost 1 meter high. His basement was flooded to a depth of 1.5m,
which ruined everything including his heating system and electrical
panel. His Infiniti sports car in the garage was a total loss. The
house that he lives in was built 65 years ago and nothing like that
has ever happened before. Cell phone service was very sporadic as the
cell towers lost power and the backup batteries on the towers were
good for a few hours, after that nothing.
I am sure that many many more horror stories will come out when
communication is fully restored.
I am writing this e-mail from a Starbucks about 2 miles from my house
which has power and Internet.
