Reminds me of the old DOS era, pre- sound card "Hamcomm" data modes software 
with its interface, which applied the audio input to a simple zero-crossing 
comparator, the output of which toggled a handshake line on an RS232 port. 
In spite of the lack of bits, it managed to generate a reasonable spectrum 
display, etc.
