Wow thank you all, I knew you wouldn't let me down.
Garry, Graham and John thanks John initially I had it as /P but it repeats every 10 / 15 mins and I verified it as /L so Garry's comment makes sense. I am hoping it's my RX, its a lightly converted PMR which didn't aught have image issues. If not I thought the RSGB had unilaterally changed the band plan on 4m there is hardly anywhere that isn't designated a data frequency now. But I will keep my opinions this time to my self as it's not an LF issue.
So thanks every one for yeoman support.

Yes
There are a couple of 4 mtr gateways in Merseyside, 70.260 MHz is listed AM/FM calling frequency ? other frequency's are listed as internet gateways .. can you see the call listed on echo link ?
I found someone pirating a silent key call on the local 4 mtr one ..interesting point as the keeper was quite antagonistic when i pointed out he was relaying a pirate transmission , each to his own I suppose ?

Thank you Jim and David
These noisy beacon things just pop up all over the place now on VHF and probably HF too if I listened.
I am hoping it is just an artifact of the receiver and not actually on 70.260mHz but it was loud and zero beat with Dave M1CLK whom I worked earlier today.
I can't find any reference to it doing a search, these self publicising beacons tend to have massive web sites but not this one .......... hmmmm.
Thanks again anyway. 73 es GL petefmt I support www.NotSpotTelecom.Com your community Telco / ISP. --- On Sun, 30/5/10, M0FMT <[email protected]> wrote:

Hi all
What does /L after the call sign mean?
I am monitoring 70.260 mHz AM call and op frequency and am getting G8SJP/L in cw like some beacon mode. Have the RSGB stuffed the band plan on 4m again?
Any ideas please?
