Hi John, Andy, Roelof,

Yes, it was just a lurid headline ;-) I know that it is possible also in summer.
However it is even more rare than in winter and the -15 reports were remarkable even more. I've not been on MF for weeks and gave it a spontaneous try, didn't expect much and was surprised even more then.
It simply shows that it's worth to stay on air all the time on that band, no matter what the QRN or time of year tells :-)

Good DX all,

Stefan,

It must be difficult to run such a high frequency transmitter when you can't hear the loading coil singing!

The reports were from my site in Maine. I was surprised to see them last night, as there were strong thunderstorms about 200 km to the north, and the static was loud.

And you and Roelof are certainly correct that the underlying TA propagation is year-round. Increased noise is a limiting factor in the warmer months, as are the shorter dark periods. Surface wave propagation over land is better in the colder weather. The effects of solar weather dominate this path in all seasons, though.

Thanks for providing the signals. I'll do some modest-power transmitting from the Maine site in the next month, once I have a suitable tuning network for the loop.
