And eventually, Graham, those old Ansons ended up giving "Air Experience Flights" to a generation of
ATC cadets and an Entry or two of RAF Apprentices and Boy Entrants!

No 62 OTU took over the Airborne Interception (AI) Training Flight from No. 3 RS, consisting of 10 Ansons and an initial course of 24 pupils. The unit's projected establishment was to be three squadrons, each with 14 Ansons, 14 pilots and 14 observer-instructors. Each aircraft was fitted out as a flying classroom with duplicate AI indicators so that the instructor could monitor the pupil's interpretation of what was being seen on the cathode ray tube, while a second pupil watched the target's behaviour visually form the front seat as he listened to the commentary over the intercom. When the time came to act as the target aircraft, the pupils were expected to keep their pilot on track between two radar beacons, a boring but useful exercise known as 'beacon bashing'

Dear LF,

please excuse my lack of English proficiency, but what does the term "beacon bashing" mean? Must be something like "assaulting beacons in public", finger pointing at their operators, or repeatedly claiming they are the root of all evil on the band...

But, who would ever do such a thing?
