Torbay, Newfoundland is about 47.657degrees North, 52.729degrees West,
which according to my locator program is GN37PP, or thereabouts. Distance
is 3720km to my location at IO91VR.
There wasn't really a regular schedule as such; it started off with G3NYK
successfully receiving VO1NA's beacon signal for the first time a few weeks
ago. Then we tried a few more beacon sessions in each direction, where it
became clear we could copy each other quite a lot of the time. There then
followed attempts at a 2-way QSO when Alan's propagation Xtal ball gazing
and the general noise levels looked promising - we succeeded on the 3rd
attempt. We had to use QRSS30, because there are too few hours of darkness
at this time of year for longer dot lengths. As you can see from the screen
shots on G3YXM's web site, signal levels were just about adequate for this
speed.
The problem with regular long sessions of beaconing here is that the hours
involved are a bit anti-social - it seems the best T/A propagation is
occurring between about 0100z and 0400z, which is 2am - 5am in the UK, a
bit of a struggle when you have to go to work afterwards! Having said that,
I intend to transmit some beacon signals next week for KL1X's African trip
- watch this space.
Cheers, Jim Moritz
