John,

a simple "Softrock style" front end adapted for 136 or 500kHz should work very well if you have a decent soundcard. There are a few SDR programs that works with such a front end, for example I2PHD's Winrad. Considering how narrow these bands are, there is no need for a VFO. Just use a crystal oscillator for LO and do the tuning in the software.
Perseus is indeed a very good receiver, and it is a lab' instrument as 
well. I will *never* regret buying that "appliance"! ;-)
The Perseus itself is very quiet but whenever a computer is involved in 
the receiving process, beware of the potential noise sources... Here is
