In the 1970s, copper was so expensive that aluminium was used in telephone 
cables.  Providing a reliable joint between the copper pair and an aluminium 
one was interesting.

Try checking around street cabinets and large "manhole" covers emblazoned with the logos of telecoms and utility companies (don't just look at Bravo-Tango).
