Actually it may not be such a daft train of thought. Disconnect tower
grounding strap(s) - there should be at least one (inteded to "arrest"
lightning ?)
and check to see if tower really is "earthed" via foundations.
Cannot endorse this idea! The tower *will* be earthed enough via its
foundation(s) to cause significant loss to the radiated signal in any case, given the
high RF voltages present on a resonated short antenna, but it will no longer
be earthed well enough to provide a decent path for lightning currents. Apart
from blasting one's rig to little charred pieces, and very possibly toasting
the operator to a cinder, a lightning strike of sufficient peak current can
fracture the foundation and allow the tower to fall.
