Oh and another I think the standard ic input jack is only Mono (I believe)
so not good for "clicklock" or frequency sync using the other channel. You
can use a cheap USB sound system though. This is common to a lot of older
laptops and notebooks.

Can anyone give me some advice on the suitability (or not) of small 1GHz RAM
Atom based netbooks (available for about £189 new) for these
modes/applications? I'd like something more power efficient that could be
used out /P as well as at home.
