One was expected to get at least 60% with 70 - 90% not unusual. I would
say the standard has dropped dramatically over the years.
Listen on 80 metres to the conversations and radio topics are seldom
discussed because the majority of operators know little or nothing
about radio and associated electronics. The topics are normally about
everything under the sun except amateur radio.

The pass mark was more like 50%, Mal, +/- due to the papers being moderated in those days. If anyone's interested there are ten old written RAE papers on my web site, including the one I took in May 1954. Spot the mistake in Q.8! Other papers can be made available if required.
