Dear John, LF Group,

Tom G3OLB is usually an S9 signal with me - but as I recall he is not far
from you in Devon, and the distance by itself may well account for the
difference in signal reports. With ground-wave propagation, the increased
distance to Hertfordshire, plus additional ground loss, might easily amount
to 20dB+ reduction in signal, which would make all the difference between
signal reports from Tom and myself. Also, Saturday morning was fairly noisy
here due to local 50Hz-related QRM. I doubt if being surrounded by hills is
a problem - with a wavelength of 2200m, the signal should diffract around
them with little loss. Certainly, there has been more than one LF operation
with antennas up the side of seaside cliffs that have given respectable
signals in the inland direction. It would be interesting to know what
antenna and TX power you are using there.

Thanks for the first QSO, and hope to see you again soon on 136k,

Cheers, Jim Moritz

Hello Jim,

Thanks for the call last Saturday. Sorry you had a difficult time to copy.
I wonder if you heard G3OLB who I worked prior to your call? Tom reported
599 and a large signal from me. I am wondering if I am suffering from
great
attenuation as a resuly of my location which is only 30ft asl. and
surrounded by hills rising up to 550 ft. I live in a hole really. I am
not
conversant with the nature of propagation under these circumstances. I
wonder if you or any of the lf group have any thoughts on this matter? If
my
problem is the transmitting antenna I can work on that but if its the
location that is difficult.
