The big resistor should not dissipate anything at all if the two amplifiers are both operating and giving the same output power.

Only if one amplifier output drops below the output of the other does the resistor dissipate energy. In this case it dissipates the energy which, in the absence of a combiner of this type, would have flowed from one amplifier into the other and could have destroyed one amplifier (or the other (or both)).
