My first encounter with a soldering iron (aged about 12, I guess) was when
someone said "Here, hold this a minute", and I grabbed it by the metal
barrel bit, beause my friend was still holding the handle. I got a nasty
burn right across my hand. I learned from my mistake ... but some kind of
warning might have been nice. A soldering iron stand might have prevented
the accident too!
Of course, soldering irons will have to be even hotter when we go lead-free.

At work, we use a training video, to teach about soldering and solding irons. I have also shown it at the Radio Club and it was well received, generating some good conversation about construction techniques.

A research organisation that shall remain nameless has just made the
decision
that soldering irons have to have warning notices attached as they may be
HOT.
Perhaps this would be a suitable sign.
