CRYSTAL MIXER EXCITER FOR 137KHZ
All my attempts to construct any sort of VFO/synthesiser/divider have
ended in failure. I am not sure why I have such a reliable failure
rate with digital circuits - I strongly suspect incompetence.
It is not the case that my amplifiers oscillate and my oscillators
don't. I seem to be able to make ugly construction RF and AF
circuits that work first time so I was looking a solution that did
not involve digital circuits.
>From crystals box I found two crystals on 10489.37 and 10355.0 kHz
respectively. I built two FET Colpits oscillators, firstly with a
variable capacitor across the lower frequency oscillator crystal but
then found that it worked best (even output across the frequency
range) with the variable capacitor in series higher oscillator crystal.
While trying to decided on a suitable mixer/filter I saw this e-mail
from Peter DF3LP who described a very similar exciter. Peter kindly
sent me a copy of his circuit (which uses 5MHz crystals) , which gave
me enough ideas to complete the exciter.
Apparently the first circuit of this type (that I am aware of) was
built by DJ1ZB.
The main attraction of this circuit is that if both oscillators are
built in the same enclosure with identical components the output
frequency is held constant because any drift in one oscillator is
compensated for by an equivalent drift in the other.
My circuit is made from junk box components and the measured drift
was 137.6530kHz to start and 137.6524kHz after 3 hours.

In my last e-mail I described a SCW QSO with DJ8WL (using the above
exciter I might add) whos name I gave as Geri! Sorry Peter.

Hello Lowfers,

I have to apologize for all the English speaking people here, but I found
an old poem, describing the problems of receiving a broadcast transmission
in the 20's. There are many similarities to all our daily receiving
experiments on longwave, so with your permission I would like to post this
poem her, although it is in German language. Unfortunately, I am unable to
translate, however, I know that also some of our non-Germans fellows
understand and speak perfectly German (73s to ON7YD):

"Fernempfang"

Es blitzt der Blick wie ein Diktator
Die Hand umkrampft den Kondensator
Die Röhren glüh'n, der Kopp desgleichen
Nischt is mal wieder zu erreichen
Die ganze Tour total vermasselt
        Es prasselt!

Hängt die Antenne denn noch richtig?
Die Frage scheint mir äußerst wichtig!
Man findet gerade dort sehr oft, ei, ei!
Ne Isolierungsschweinerei.
Es starrt der Blick zu Dach, verdattert,
        Es knattert!

Heut' macht das Suchen arg Beschwerde
Versuchen wir 'ne andre "Erde"
Vielleicht liegt an der "Lampe drei",
Die unerhörte Schweinerei.
Doch wie du hast auch umgemodelt,
        Es brodelt!

Und Vetter Max, Kusine Trude,
Sie sitzen grinsend in der Bude.
Max stößt die Trude an: Quatsch, komm'!
Hurrah! Da pfeift was! Das ist Rom!!
Jetzt ruhig, Kinder! Nischt gequasselt!

        s'geht allen ebenso!!!

Dear OM Peter, G3LDO,

I also had bad results with VXO drift both in single X-tal and in mixed settings. I found out that the old big type X-tals in the range between 5 and 9 MHZ are most suitable for use in VXO's. These x-tals give a tuning range well over a 100kC's where the small type X-tals will not tune over a range of more than 30-40kC's The coil in series with te X-tal can play tricks as far as stability is concerned. This can be observed by putting your finger near the inductor. I found out that when the VXO does not return rapidly to its original frequency i had constructed a VFO instead. I had better results when two or more inductors (range at least 1:10 in uH) are put in series, this also limits the influence of paracitic capacitance in the inductors. An other test i found out is to warm one of the x-tals with a finger and observe the drift back to the original frequency when 'cooling off'. When the original frequency is reached i am sure the X-tals have the main influence on the osc
illating frequency.

An other point a observed is the value to be used for the capactors dividing the voltalge in the collpits should be carefully designed. To mutch amplification makes the oscilator easy to start with a rock-solid frequency. To little amplification will not allow the circuit to oscilate at all. Sometimes a extra buffer/amplifier stage is needed to make sure the mixer works better but this does not influence stability.

Good luck on LF and best 73's

Hallo Lowfers,

Peter, G3LDO mentioned his difficulties to build a reliable and stabile
exciter for LF and describes the solution developed by DJ1ZB.

I myself also had my difficulties to build a solution from scratch. After
experimenting with 5-6 MHz VFOs and frequency dividers, I came accross a
nice synthesizer kit. With a frequency range between 1 Hz (!) and 54 MHz
(!) it is a real overkill for the LF band, but the features contained in it
are excellent for what we are doing. The resolution is 1 Hz, the accuracy,
once calibrated is in the same range and long time stability is excellent

Good to get the Whitton ARG antenna fired up on 72kHz on Saturday morning.
I managed to work Graham G3XTZ cross band to 80m but no sign of Peter G3LDO.
Tried to call Mike, G3XDV via the landline, but no reply. The Rugby
transmitter around 73.3 was on which means no chance of any QSOs with our
midlands stations...Now I can appreciate the problems faced by DJ8WL and DF2PY
with broadcast intermods. Incidentally, I wonder if any of the noise
cancelling techniques being developed here could be used to combat the
broadcast QRM on the other side of the North Sea

Sunday. Nice to see so many L.F.ers at the RSGB VHF rally at Sandown Park.

G3XTZ, G3GRO, G3KAU, G4JNT and G3XDV, G3YGF G4FKK - at a distance.

Also, had a brief conversation with Peter Blair G3LTF who has appeared on the
bands in recent weeks. Peter is well known for his 70 and 23cm moonbounce
station but had aquired a large transformer for a new 136kHz amplifier. So
look out for a bigger signal from Peter in the near future.

PSK31 is working well on receive here, with good signals on 14.070 and 3580.15
The VXO crystal should be here at the end of the week so I'll be ready for a
sked with Andy and an RX test with Rik on 137.6 (ish) a few days after.

Hi All,

I have put a description of my AD9832 DDS VFO on my web site.
It is a small VFO module, about 50x30 mm.

Schematic diagram is in PDF format (Adobe Acrobat)
PCB layout is in Postscript format.
PIC source code for DDS controller is there too.

When I started on 136 I just used a simple VFO on 8.6-8.9MHz, divided that
by 64 and got a nice and stable 136kHz signal. Although it had a +/- 5Hz
shortterm and a +/- 50Hz longterm drif it was perfect suitable for normal CW.
When starting with slow CW this drift was not tolerable and I decided to
built a PLL VFO. I checked out for some special PLL IC's but either they
were hard to find or far to expensive, so I just took a handfull of
ordinary CMOS IC's (CD4000 series) a constructed a simple PLL VFO on 8.6MHz
in 64Hz steps. This signal was divided by 64 to get 136kHz in 1Hz steps.
Total cost was about 1000BFR (25 Euro), half of it spent on thumbwheel
switches.
I ended up with 9 CMOS IC's (OK, you can do it with a single specialized IC
but these CMOS are available in any electronics shop and alltogether
cheaper than a PLL IC). Everything fits on a 6 by 9 cm piece of 'testboard'.
I there is interest I will scan in the schematics and make it available.
But do not expect something special it is just a 'textbook' PLL system.

Receiver setup here working much better. With slow CW not bothered by
Loran any more

19/2 1930 Worked ON4ZK on SCW, O both ways although he was audible
19/2 2145 Worked DF3LP on SCW, O both ways. Finished the QSO off
with me sending in fast CW but I was only R4.
On Saturday worked GW4ALG and PA0LQ ( new station for me)
Copied the following on SCW at 2010 on 137.720kHz:
HB9DFC DE IK1ODO . No other signals after that.
I have heard Marco several times and I have called but so far no QSO

On Sunday morning worked PA0SE, and HB9ASB 559/549 (best signal so far)

G'day All,

Can anyone point me in the direction of a DOS-based QRS keyer? I was
browsing and found a link to one in a file called "qrs.zip".
Unfortunately, the link didn't respond. To make things worse I have lost
the reference to the link as well. I want to use a dusted-off Amstrad
PC-640 to key an experimental transmitter.

A very busy weekend for me and very little time for radio.

But . . .

Spent some time on Friday evening trying to persuade my VFO to
cover 73kHz. Having improved its stability on 136kHz by reducing
the L and increasing the C, I now find that adding extra C will no
longer bring the VFO down to 73 - it just generates noise. No time
to do further work this weekend but looks like I need some add-in L
rather than C. So, sorry to David, G0MRF, I did try.

Saturday 21st

Out most of the day helping my son buy his first car.
But heard G3UNT (559), G3KEV (599), PA2NJN (a very good 599
but apparently not listening on 136), and GW4ALG (579).
Saw on Spectrogram ON7YD (O), IK1ODO (M) and DJ8WL (M).
The last two were much weaker than usual with deep QSB on
Saturday evening.
Worked a new one for me: G6RO, 251km away, at 549/549. My
30th station worked on 136.

Sunday
Early morning, I heard QSO between G3LDO (599) and PA0SE
(559).
RSGB VHF Convention in the morning (if you get a chance to see
the lecture by Paul Shuch, N6TX, of the SETI League, do so - it is
very entertaining), and mother in law in afternoon (not quite so
entertaining).
When I got home the wind was so strong I lowered the antenna.

By the way, having worked GM3YXM/P for the second time early in
the week, I heard the start of a QSO between him and Dave,
G3YMC. I do hope it was successful as dave is battling against
huge odds to get a signal out at all.

Advance notice - QRS tests from the earth base on 73 and 136 scheduled for
Sunday March 14th. I shall be using a 920m base and operating from the
house, not /P. I am hoping to set a new record for 73 kHz before the
allocation goes so please listen out. Exact times and frequencies will be
announced very shortly. Make a note in your diary now.

Won't an AF amplifier such as the BK Electronics work OK? They
are presumably linear - or are they still linear at 136kHz?

Hope this gets through - my last message to the group failed.

On the subject of PSK31 and the need for linear amps, will a
simple audio amp do the job? The BK Electronics amps should be
linear over its intended range. Could it be persuaded to retain its
linearity at 136kHz?

Hello everybody,

I'm a new subscriber to this list. Now the group of UA9A guys works on LF
project. The main idea is to use local broadcating MW antenna. The antenna is
204m (658') high vertical with a lot of buried radials! We'd like to get a
permission to use it during night broadcasting break (approx. 2100z-2300z). In
concerning this project I'm interested in any information/programs/etc. If we'll
get that permission, I'd like to appoint some skeds... Anyway I'll keep you all
informed.

Thank you, I did !

1. Where is your QTH ?
   (Should I turn my loop?)

2. What is your earth base bearing?
   (Is it a directional antenna?)

3. Can you tell me something about the
   geometry? Any terminations? Approx.
   output power?
(I could simulate it for checking the
probability to hear you here in North
    Germany.)

I´m looking forward to "see" your signal...

hi,

I posted this request to the uk.radio.amateur newsgroup without success,
so I thought someone on this list may be able to help, as it's more a
MF/LF "thing".

I'm looking for info on the Redifon G142 MF beacon transmitter which
would appear to have some potential for modification to 136 kHz. The TX
is all-valved, runs a 3 by 5B/255M PA, plate & screen modulated by a
pair of 5B/254Ms and runs MCW or CW. It would appear to be on approx 360
kHz at present, crystal-controlled. I'd like a circuit diagram if
possible or at least some idea of it's lower design frequency, the
present owner has been told this is around 200kHz. There 2 complete rigs
in racks plus another for spares with some component spares as well.
Although the seller wants a fairly high QRK for the lot I think this
would make an interesting project and am keen to get on the band by this
route, if feasible.

Finally, one TX is marked "BN", which I take to be it's former callsign,
any idea where this was/is?

TIA,

Roger Basford

Hello Group,

I´m planning to combine the output of
8 ferrite rods for comparision to my
coax loop. Each rod has it´s own coil.

How should I arrange this array for
highest performance? One above the other?
Next to each other? On a straight line?
Filling a volume?

Some years ago I built a "monster" ferrite
rod by glueing 5x18cm rods together. It was
much better than bundling them. Of course it
was too fragile to handle and had only one
coil. I don´t know how to simulate a ferrite
rod with NEC.

Any ideas?

As requested by Peter G3LDO, I have now added a facility to CWSLOW (was
SLOWCW) to increase the inter character gap lengths slightly to improve
readability when using Gram software etc.

One additional benefit of looking at this software again:
Just been running it under Windows NT and to my amazement it not only works
properly but operates fully while minimised in the task bar. All the info
I had been given about NT suggested that progs such as this that operate
directly on the PC hardware would not work at all !!

For anyone who wants to press an ancient 8086 macine into service - and I
know of at least two using an Amstrad 640 etc - the CWSLOW code is compiled
to the simplest (8 bit ??) form suitable for these machines. Performance on
'286 and higher processors is not compromised - or certainly not in a way
that can be seen.

I, too, have built one of these and can attest to the fact that, when kept at
room temperature, it drifts no more than +/- 0.1 Hz as measured with my

No, Zim, I don't mind at all! Thats what I try since several days! I will
try again:

The synthesizer I am using is either available as a kit (see below) or as a
build and assembled unit. It makes use of an integrated DDS circuit named
AD9850.

There are a couple of information sources available for the AD9850.

The Analog Devices AD9850 is a CMOS, 125 MHz complete direct digital
synthesiser on a single chip. It uses a single 5 V or 3.3 V supply, and
with a 125 MHz clock, can generate a low-distortion sine wave or a square
wave, from under 1 Hz up to about 60 MHz, with a tuning resolution of
0.0291 Hz. Full data on the device is available from ADI's web site:

                                        http://www.analog.com

Off course, this device was never created for low-frequency, however, I got
hold of a kit that includes a controller and a display, it has one Hertz
resolution and ten memory channels and so it is ideal to drive a
longwave-PA. It even has a build in correction factor for frequency
stability, so once you found out how many ppm you are away from the qrg
where the device should be, you can program that permanently into the
memory. This allows a freqency stability and repeatability of around 1 Hz

Sorry, Peter. In last weekend I had several QRM problem from an (still)
unidentified light dimmer.

Then by Sunday morning while calling HB9DFQ again I saw Paul drifting
into the signal of IK5ZPV. Then again I had two power failures, and I had
to give precedence to the dish washer and shut down the TX ... !

I hope more luck in listening conditions by next week.

Activity in Italy is fastly rising: IK5ZPV is already on this list, IK5MXX
and IK5BQL
also have a good signal. Some other is testing. Grazie a tutti!

If you're planning a high power amplifier using a low Voltage supply then the
following SMPSU's are available from Greenweald Electronics.

  8 Volts @ 75 Amps ( 600 Watts output) Price £20
Manufactured, if I heard correctly, by Deltron.

Phone 01703 236363 (Southampton)

Not of much use by itself, but they may be adjustable and if they can be
connected in series 4 would give you 32V @ 2400 Watts !
I wonder if its possible to inject a 136kHz signal somewhere into its logic
and generate 600W directly from the psu?

There's a standard £3 delivery charge within the UK for any quantity.

Thanks G0ONA for the info.

Does anyone have a source for a quantity of electrolytic capacitors for a 28V
supply?
10,000 and up. (30,000 is ideal) @ 30 - 40V.

Thanks

David G0MRF

Hello Lowfers,

still my messages get chopped, so here is part 2 :
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are two devices available, one with a frequency range between 1 Hz
and 16 MHz (kit 139.39 US$, assembled 189.95 US$) and the other one from1
Hz to 54 Hz (kit 169.95, assembled 219.95 US$). Not cheap, however, I took
the 54 MHz version and use the device also as a very accurate
test-transmitter. The company delivering these devices is

Their webside can be found at

                                        http://www.xmetric.com/sseng/

There is a description of simpler version of this a DDS driven with the

http://www.lfheller.demon.co.uk/dds.htm

Hope this helps people with the same problems as Peter and myself to
overcome the exciter problem.

>In my last e-mail I described a SCW QSO with DJ8WL (using the above

Peter, I am looking forward to QSO with you! Currently I do still have a
kind of a PA problem, but hope to solve it soon ...

Yes, I have also built the DDS VFO kit at...........
             http://www.xmetric.com/sseng/dvfo2.shtml

It is an excellent VFO and very clean and stable......

So far I have only used mine as a test oscillator.

Hope to build it into a VLF Rx shortly.......

Again a lot of activity this weekend, but unfortunately only little time.

Stations heard in 'normal' CW :
G3LDO (559), G4GVC (559), GW4ALG (529), PA0LQ (579), PA2NJN (599), DF2PY
(579), EIOCF (549), G3YXM (579), PA0SE (589), G3OLB (429), PA0KDM (429),
HB9ASB (539).
Stations seen in slow CW :
DF3LP (529), DJ8WL (539), G3LDO (559), G3XDV (539), IK1ODO (529).

I managed to work G3OLB for a new one, gave 429 (but during the QSO he went
down to 319) - received 559. Distance to Tom is about 400km from here, I
wonder what his working conditions are ?

>From HB9ASB, JN36pt

Here I've still troubles with my PC (seems to be a Monday device), so
I'm back to the most reliable mode and only qrv in normal CW.
But with a little bit more power from a new TX. A G3YXM design with the
following variations: Vackar VFO on 6.8 MHz and 4*IRFP250 supplied with
35V/20A.
So far I've made very good experience with the Vackar (I also used it in
my former TX): If temperature compensated it has a good stability,
acceptable for SlowCW. Anyway, next project is a DDS.
The IRFP250 is very robust (and it handles much more current than the
IRFP450) and so far they survived every mismatch.
Only protection circuit is an overcurrent protection at 25A, realized
with a sensing transistor over a shunt, instead of the hall element.
It triggers a Flip-Flop and stops the driver until reset.

Unfortunately I am probably now also in the crocodile class: In the past
few weeks I've heard often stations, probably calling me, but I couldn't
copy them. Especially in QRN caused by "electric" snowfall. Please give
me long calls (your call only) so that I get the chance to adjust the
receiver and Audio-DSP.

Last Sunday I could also receive PA2NJN - he was very strong - about the
same as DF2PY. But both are probably also in the crocodile league, hi.

Paul, HB9DFQ is now also QRV in Slow CW and I'm trying to get Bert,
HB9DCE on this mode. Bert has a very good receiving situation and hears
probly better than me. They have both approx. 100W RF and good antennas.
Paul is located near Zurich and Bert near Winterthur, 150km NE from my
QTH.

Sorry for all those stations I missed in the past weeks - we will try
again.

Dear All,

Some of you may have heard me making funny noises on 136. This has been a
test of my PSK31 equipment. I can now produce about 200W or so of the stuff
which is about 6dB down on my normal level but probably good enough for a
test. Is anyone else ready to give it a try? Please let me know and we can
set up a sked.

I'm ready to go anytime with this mode, only about 30 - 40 Watts though.
Haven't yet built an 'MRF PA after blowing one of the Maplin modules
during the Transatlantic tests earlier.

Is that 6dB down on mean power ? As PSK31 has a peak to mean ratio of
exactly 3dB I suspect the extra power reduction is to get the transmitter
into a suitable linear region.

If I hear you I'll reply directly.

Had a PSK31 QSO with G3PLX a year ago, 390 km with near 100% copy each way
- In the region of 100 Watts each end.

Dave,

I've been PSK31'ing on HF for the last couple of days so will listen for you. My 136KHz linear won't be ready for another couple of weeks though.

Let me know when you plan to be on next.

level is 100W in Russia.

Today was a conversation with owner of this BC radiostation... Probably,
we'll got a permission! Anyway, I'll start to prepare rig and
software... I've got Kenwood TS-570D, Texas Instruments Pentium-133
notebook with 80MB RAM and integrated Sound Blaster. I should build
136kHz transverter or cristall controlled transmitter (if sensitivity of
TRCVR is enough for 136). The main problem is PA...

It seems to me it'll take two-three months to prepare.

Still managing to get some operating time in, but too busy for much else at
the moment. Thanks for the signal reports, particularly from Rik and Mike,
PA3BSH.

Rugby was rattling away on Saturday morning so there was no chance of
hearing
anything on 73kHz here - sorry David..... another time for sure.

My antenna is down at the moment. The gales on Sunday night stretched the
wire and fouled it in some trees; I've dropped the lot before it snaps to
make sure I don't lose the halyard. I can replace the wire anytime, but
getting the rope back up in the big Poplar is another matter! Hopefully I
will get a chance to re-rig it before the weekend.

Buckmaster seems very poor for German stations - can anyone supply me (via
Kate's email mek@le.ac.uk, of course) current postal addresses for any of
the following
stations I've worked on 136?:
                                DJ5DI
                                DK9DX

                                (DL4YHF - operator at DF0WD)
Thanks and see you on LF!

There is a good (inofficial) DL callbook at the DK0TUI webpages :

http://www.systemtechnik.tu-ilmenau.de/ham/ham.html

I just checked it and they seemed to reorganizing the page at the moment,
but I suppose the callbook will be available again as soon as they get
things running.

There are a few designs around on the net. Mine is at
http://www.wireless.org.uk then follow the 136 links. The simple 12V
portable rig would easily produce 100W. There is also the Ropex TX available
now quite cheaply. The UK stockists are Nevada (http://www.nevada.co.uk)
Good Luck!

It's a different TX, a PA strip from the transverter output of the IC735
which I have modified to give an output down there. The PA is a hybrid of
David's design and my topband FET linear with a pair of IXFH75N10 at 24V. It
produces 250W key-down (PEP) and obviously shows less average when sending
PSK31 due to the holes in it! Do you intend to use BPSK or QPSK? Any other
parameters I should set? I have copied several stations on 80 so the RX
works OK. I will put out some calls down the bottom of the band, about
136.2, at around 8pm for the rest of the week. I will listen co-channel.
Any reports gratefully received.

QRM is increasing significant below 136.5 here in Belgium and I believe it
is even worse in Germany.
Any chance to use 137.65 as PSK activity centre as Andy suggested some days
ago?
This would increase your chances for being heard (seen) 'overseas' ...

BPSK is the norm, as it is effectively 3dB up in S/N over QPSK. If the link
shows burst errors we transfer to the QPSK mode which is targetted against
that sort of interference. There are no other parameters to set, just
remember that the Tx tone setting can actually cover the whole of this LF
band over its 200 - 2999 Hz range so be carefull if you change it!

Be listening at 2000z when I can.

Hi all,

this mail is sent as CC to the reflector for information .....

The German RegTP (licencing authority) will probably limit the power on LF
for German
amateurs to 20 watts TX output power in the NEW regulations (presently we
are having
preliminary regulations allowing the same output only. However, DA0LF was
allowed to
run 100 watts out...).

To avoid getting a flood of replies I am sending this mail as direct
question to some
amateurs in neighbouring countries asking them for direct reply to my email
address.
Unfortunately I do not have any addresses in Scandinavia (sorry Johan !) to
ask for the
same info (Finland, Sweden, Norway etc.) ... Please reply also, as well as
others in the
East/Southeast of EU :

***************************************************************************
**************************

"What are the current regulations on LF regarding output power or transmit
power or ERP
(for amateurs) written down in your country ? How is it defined (ERP or
TX-power output)?"
If someone has infos about Luxembourg, Greece, Czech Republic, Lithuania
please feel
free to reply as well.
Any info about other EU countries not mentioned here is also appreciated...

***************************************************************************
**************************

Please get back to me with the answer asap.
Thank you very much for your kind assistance!

I will try some calls on 137.65 at any time you can listen Rik. There is not
enough activity to just call randomly, when would be convenient?
I wanted to keep out of the way a bit when just testing!
Meanwhile I will continue the 136.2 tests at 2000 GMT on Friday using BPSK.

Hallo Peter,

Hello Dave and Group,

So far I could not be QRV for Dave's PSK tests at 2000 UT due to work
overload, but I will be listening (looking) tonight on 136.2kHz.
What about a test on 137.65kHz at 2100 UT to 2115 or 2130 UT. Would be
interesting if you could gradually decrease TX power during that period
(let's say 3dB down every 5 minutes) ?
I will report on monday.

QRS is slow-CW transmitting software running under Windows.
Since the first release of QRS version 1.08 (november 1998) slow-CW on
136kHz has evoluated from a marginal activity to a popular and widely
accepted mode. This created the need to revise QRS, on the one hand to
add some features requested by users and on the other hand to make slow
CW more efficient and try to reduce the time needed for a QSO.
My thanks go to G3YXM, G0AKN and DK8KW for the suggestions to improve
QRS and/or for testing it.

Overview of the changes from QRS version 1.08 to 1.16 :

* Test mode added (suggestion of G0AKN) :
Ability to push and release PTT and key for test and tune purposes.

* QSO mode added :
Since QRS often is used in combination with the Spectogram software,
the QSO mode allows optimal use of the screen in combination with
Spectogram. It also allows a text of max. 70 characters to be edited
and transmitted in a single window.

* QSK facilities added :
QSK allows you to listen during the 'key up' periods your transmission.
Several timing parameters can be set to optimize the QSK for your
transmitter. The PTT handling is calculated ahead, so QSK will cause no
  delay to the CW keying.

* Selectable dash to dot ratio :
The dash to dot ratio can be set as 3/1 or 2/1. The 2/1 ratio is
sufficient to distinguish between dots and dashes using 'videography'
and results in an average 20% time saving compared to the 3/1 ratio.

* Alarm function (suggestion of DK8KW) :
An alarm function is available that will alert you a selectable time (up
to 999 seconds) before the transmission will end.

QRS is freeware and can be downloaded from :
- LWCA web-page : http://members.aol.com/us66soft/qrs.htm
- G3YXM's Longwave web-page : http://www.picks.force9.co.uk/136.htm
The 1.08 version at this locations should be replaced by the 1.16 version
the next couple of days.
I can also send it to you via e-mail (180kB zipped), just send a request to

I'm sorry if I have not given an individual reply to those who requested one
but hope this gets through via the listserver. All other attempts resulted
in messages being returned. I have also been in Wales for a week so
apologies for the delay. Test details:
Earth base tests Sunday 14 March on 73 and 136. 920m base.
Both frequencies using QRS 10 second dot period. Beacon G0AKN.
Schedule. Times UTC. 0930 - 1200 frequency 71.85 kHz
                                        12-30 - 14-00 frequency 137.05 kHz

Attempting one-way record on 73 kHz (first overseas contact?). On 136 kHz -
who knows?

Location IO91LR Great Haseley, Oxfordshire (near Junction 7 of M40). Earth
base orientation North-South. Directional properties unknown. 1000 watts
into 920m base, wire at ground level (or below!). Impedance and current at
73 kHz and 136 kHz will be reported later when wire is in place. It is
being laid for one day only across 3 fields, each belonging to a different
farmer (which has complicated the issue).
Would be grateful for any reports.

In the past I have complained a lot about Loran, which is quite
strong here on the South Coast.
Viewing the band using Spectogram shows that within the bandwidth of
the narrowest CW filter there may be 18 or 20 Loran sidebands. Each
individual sideband is not that strong but is about the same as an O
report slow CW signal.
Some time ago someone suggested (either G4JNT or G3PLX) that there
should no problem in working between these Loran sidebands and
although I did not believe it at the time I now know that it is easy
- I have been doing it for the last couple of weeks.

The following is a description of how the band appears here when
clear of evening QRN
A frequency quoted as .703 means 137.703kHz.

About 8 Loran lines close together .772 - .800
Clear band .769 - .771
Clear band .761 - .763

2 strong Loran lines and noise .755 - .758
Big carrier at .745 with upper sideband noise to .754. (about S6 - 7
in fast CW terms)
Lots of weaker Loran sidebands .709 - .742
Clear band .695-.703
Clear band .681 - 690
Clear band .667 - .675

Frequency bands not quoted have Loran sidebands. The problem with the
Loran is that many of the sidebands are pulsed so that they look like
slow CW signals although I have got to know them now.

I worked Peter, DJ8WL OO this evening (1645UT). On peaks his signal
was strong enough to be audible using a narrow filter, other times he
was down in the noise. Rain static closed in at the end of the QSO.

I copied Dave's PSK31 tests which made some pretty pictures on Gram.
I measured the centre frequency as .653 with sidebands extending to
.671 and .637. Additional single frequency sidebands occured at .702
and .608. (I have saved the WAV files if you want them Dave)

(I don't know why, but something/someone keeps cutting my messages into
pieces ... so here is the second part ...)

nevertheless, I had a nice slow-CW QSO today with Peter, DF3LP, who gave me
"O" instead of "M" as last time. Additionally I had my first normal-CW QSO
with DF0WD (op: Wolf, DL4YHF), about 115 km away (549/339)! Conditions on
LF obviously depend on believe ... finally got my G0MRF-PA ready without
killing any mot FETs. Got a lot of hints and tips from various sources, tnx
very much. Most important was to get the bias-voltage regulator RF-free and
to use a pi-filter (12nF - 57 uH - 27 nF - 57 uH - 12 nF) to get rid of any
reflected voltage peaks from the antenna loading coil. Now I can make full
use of the German power limit ...

Looking forward to an exciting Sunday. Will be listening (watching) 137.700
kHz and calling cq from time to time (4 seconds).

Best 73

Geri, DK8KW (W1KW)

P.S.: Next step is to get full antenna back into the air, put it higher up
(10-12m), get better grounding, and improve my ferrite RX-antenna to
participate in the 73 kHz tests by G0AKN ...

73
Geri, DK8KW (W1KW)

"Fernempfang"

Es blitzt der Blick wie ein Diktator
Die Hand umkrampft den Kondensator
Die Röhren glüh'n, der Kopp desgleichen
Nischt is mal wieder zu erreichen
Die ganze Tour total vermasselt
        Es prasselt!

Hängt die Antenne denn noch richtig?
Die Frage scheint mir äußerst wichtig!
Man findet gerade dort sehr oft, ei, ei!
Ne Isolierungsschweinerei.
Es starrt der Blick zu Dach, verdattert,
        Es knattert!

Heut' macht das Suchen arg Beschwerde
Versuchen wir 'ne andre "Erde"
Vielleicht liegt an der "Lampe drei",
Die unerhörte Schweinerei.
Doch wie du hast auch umgemodelt,
        Es brodelt!

Und Vetter Max, Kusine Trude,
Sie sitzen grinsend in der Bude.
Max stößt die Trude an: Quatsch, komm'!
Hurrah! Da pfeift was! Das ist Rom!!
Jetzt ruhig, Kinder! Nischt gequasselt!

        s'geht allen ebenso!!!
