There are many subtleties to choice of CRC size and decoder list length. I've been working on some notes to clarify this complex issue. Only half finished but I'll post the link here, by way of a preview http://abelian.org/ebnaut/ops.shtml The 'optimum list length' will maximise the message success rate, but you will almost always either get the correct decode, or a false decode.
