Ah, i see.. thanks, I missed that on the photo ... so there won't be kilovolts of AC on the DC exciation coil. Or, depending on how the ring core is oriented in the "mostly air core" coil, the AC flux lines would run perpendicular to the DC flux, which also eliminate the need for a large AC-blocking coil for the DC exciation.
