Back to the original question - the barrel presents a giant shorted turn to the loading coil but that doesn't necessarily destroy the Q, it depends on how well the coil couples power to the resistance of the shorted turn. Coupling to the barrel would reduce the effective inductance of the coil a little and you can test for that by measuring L with the coil in and out. > the Tx output voltage and current are just the same?
