In the next step, Hew was disconnected, leaving only the E antenna on the left (amber). Then E that was removed, and only Hew connected to the right (blue). Quite clearly, the amber and blue patterns exhibit swapped maxima and minima.
 
In the literature it has been proposed that there is a non-reciprocity effect in long range VLF propagation, with significantly lower attenuation for eastward than for westward paths. If this is the case it would have further enhanced the long path to Europe. An interesting test would be whether observers in the western part of North America see similarly deep nulls in the NWC spectum during their afternoon, or if the westward long path contribution is indeed weaker for them.
