I don't think Spiros' electrical = antenna would=20 have significant directivity. The reason for the missing = reports from=20 east Europe is most likely Loran interference on his TX frequency = 137550 Hz=20 (as mentioned as "dial" in his earlier email).
 
All stations of the Russian Loran chain = (GRI 8000)=20 emit discrete spectral lines on multiples of 6.25 Hz. These are already=20 significant here in Germany, and would be much stronger further east. In = Western=20 Europe,=20 the relevant chains are Lessay (GRI 6731) and Sylt = (GRI=20 7499). Line frequencies which should be avoided appear on exact integer=20 multiples of 50000/GRI. 
 
If you used Opera's=20 automatic TX frequency selection it would probably evade those=20 lines which are visible at the TX location, but it knows = nothing=20 of those in distant potential target = areas.
