My unproven theory is that there may be a = hidden n / n-1 rounding error in the one-pixel-per-FFT-bin mapping, and = the ominous line is actually calculated as the maximum magnitude from = two adjacent bins, which would make it a tad brighter on average. I've noticed that the eye tends to 'join up the dots' = when=20 looking for signals - it's easy to believe that there is something there = in the=20 noise.
