The official reason is protection of the maritime mobile and aeronautical r=
adionavigation services.
In the past 5 years I have monitored the 450-525kHz range and apart from NA=
VTEX on 518 and 490kHz I haven't heard any maritime mobile signals. There a=
re a lot of NDB's (non directional beacon) that are part of the aeronautica=
l radionavigation service, but their number is declining.
Recently I have talked to a older pilot and he confirmed that these days ND=
B's are seldom used for navigation but that a lot of airports keep them wor=
king for safety reasons.

Thank you for your info on NOV renewal and protection zones, I appear to be
falling behind on the politics of LF, why all of these protection zones in
Europe and North Africa, is it because of the beacons?

All,

the 800km protection zone (=3D 1W EIRP limit) will affect a large part of
Europe.
Keep in mind that the protection zone is not only to the east but also to
the south (all northern Africa countries requested protection).
Attached a small map that shows the situation.
