Rik,

Strictly speaking, these three countries are not part of the United= Kingdom. I am not sure of the constitutional position of the Isle Of Man= (GD) except I believe its Parliament (Tynwald) is older than the one at= Westminster.

The Channel Islands (GU and GJ) have never been part of the UK.  = ;They were on the winning side with William of Normandy in 1066 and I unde= rstand that their allegiance is to the British monarch _ as successor to= the Dukes of Normandy_. The UK government handles defence and external affairs for them, but they are not part of= the EU and they do not have Value-Added Tax.

Legislation passed by the UK Parliament is, where appropriate, submit= ted to the States of Jersey and the States of Guernsey (the islands' parli= aments) for consideration.

Note also that Sark does have its own parliament (Chief Pleas) but is= still part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, as is Alderney.
