Microcontrollers with integrated CAN bus controller (that's one of the networks widely used in cars) are incredibly cheap these days. Furthermore, having all those controllers connected to one common 'bus' (or, at least in German cars, two buses) simplifies testing... as long as the bus (network) itself isn't the reason for other trouble ;-) .
