Rik,

Strictly speaking, these three countries are not part of the United Kingdo=
m. I am not sure of the constitutional position of the Isle Of Man (GD) ex=
cept I believe its Parliament (Tynwald) is older than the one at Westminst=
er.

The Channel Islands (GU and GJ) have never been part of the UK.  They were=
 on the winning side with William of Normandy in 1066 and I understand tha=
t their allegiance is to the British monarch _ as successor to the Dukes=
 of Normandy_. The UK government handles defence and external affairs for=
 them, but they are not part of the EU and they do not have Value-Added Ta=
x.

Legislation passed by the UK Parliament is, where appropriate, submitted=
 to the States of Jersey and the States of Guernsey (the islands' parliame=
nts) for consideration.

Note also that Sark does have its own parliament (Chief Pleas) but is stil=
l part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, as is Alderney.
