This renders the transmitted information useless. g3kev ----- Original Message ----- From: "Warren Ziegler" To: Sent: Monday, January 31, 2011 12:50 PM Subject: Re: LF: OT End of the BBC World Service on Shortwave John, Pete, I'll keep it brief since we are getting further off-topic. I have two thoughts on the end of the BBC World Service on Shortwave: 1) The reliance on the Internet for program distribution is worrisome. One only need look at Egypt where the Internet is shut down, or China where it is censored. 2) The BBC World Service gives the U.K. considerable stature in the World, in other words the U.K. is a small country with a big voice and international role. Elimination of the World Service will make the U.K. just another small, non-descript country in the EU. 73 Warren K2ORS On Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 5:20 AM, M0FMT wrote: > Hi Warren > > My immediate response is that if you like it that much why not pay English > tax to help maintain it. > > However the BBC world service, the Government mouth-piece, is currently > funded by direct taxation which is probable more equitable than the new plan > which is to fund it out of the compulsory so called Licence Fee, collected > under threat of imprisonment, which is really a tax on a tax i.e. paid out > of taxed income. > > This is the dark side of English culture. > > 73 es GL petefmt > > ________________________________ > From: Warren Ziegler > To: rsgb_lf_group@blacksheep.org > Sent: Mon, 31 January, 2011 5:15:48 > Subject: LF: OT End of the BBC World Service on Shortwave > > Sad day... > http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jan/28/bbc-world-service-cuts-response > > Guess I'll have to rely on the 198 longwave transmissions. > > -- > 73 Warren K2ORS > WD2XGJ > WD2XSH/23 > WE2XEB/2 > WE2XGR/1 > > > -- 73 Warren K2ORS WD2XGJ WD2XSH/23 WE2XEB/2 WE2XGR/1
