Regarding Jan's question: There is no secret really, my QTH is not noise= free by any means. For example 160m is useless for SSB signals much below S7 while= 600m is way better but far from ideal. Daytime MF reception is poor but the nighttime rise in both QRN and signal strength tends to even out the odds,= ie. typical suburban conditions. I think the "secret" is simply as you suggest, the abscence of really stro= ng in-band signals although DI2AM is still a good signal. I haven't played wi= th disabled AGC and RF (IF) gain on 505.1kHz WSPR but should probably do so because I visually note many missed decodes. I'm using an ICOM IC-R75 and a 4x4x4m tuned & amplified delta-loop pointin= g approximately towards England, hence covering most of the European sector= of interest while reducing local noise slightly.
