What is even more galling is that HM Government would no support the Decca system a few year earlier ....a much more "radio ecologically clean" system ....so it was ripped out. Still it looks like the shipping companies will be paying for this through their Lights Dues, so we will only see it as a slight increase in the cost of chinese manufactured goods ! Now the plus side....keep an eye open for old yachty Loran receivers. I have just picked up an Apelco (Raytheon) DX6300 which I cannot get a firmware data upgade for (it still thinks Lessay is on an experimental GRI), but it locks well to the chain when the correct GRI is entered manually, and then there is a locked 10MHz output, which is referenced to a cesium standard, and easy to extract. So it makes a very cheap off-air frequency standard. It just doesn't compute the location.
