The test you heard was part of the plans from our friend 'PAT' for his special Christmas and New Year broadcasts. This time, and to make things a little more interesting, not only will there be the normal NDB transmissions, but there will also be a special "Hellschreiber" beacon test as well for a limited period, and I suspect this might have been a test of the transmitter in preparation for that which you heard. Many members will be unfamiliar with the "Hell" mode, but basically it is a very old data system, which works really well, and is very compatible with modern computer systems, and is quite easy to decode. The biggest difference here is that the Dxer gets to 'see' the message instead of just hearing it. Thankfully the software required to receive these signals is readily available, and anyone who already happens to have programmes like "Multipsk", or "MixW" installed for Navtex decoding will also find that they can receive this mode with it too. There is a dedicated 'freeware' programme created by Nino Porcino, IZ8BLY, also available, and details of where to get these are given below. The programmes all work via the soundcard, so anyone who is set up for decoding Navtex or DGPS will have no problems getting these programmes to run. Anyone receiving and decoding this test will receive a special Christmas message, and I'm sure that all reports will be appreciated (I think QSLs for the 'CLE' beacon will be out in due course Tom!). Anyone wanting to know a bit more about this mode can find details at: http://home.c2i.net/clank/ham/hell/hell.html http://home.c2i.net/clank/ham/hell/hr_dec79.html http://sharon.esrac.ele.tue.nl/mirrors/zl1bpu/FUZZY/Contents.html Free, or trial software can be downloaded from: IZ8BLY's Free Hellschreiber Decoder: http://xoomer.alice.it/aporcino/Hell/index.htm MultiPSK: http://f6cte.free.fr/ MixW: http://www.mixw.net/ Good listening everybody, now go to "Hell"!:-) 73 for now, Alan.
