Several thing are different here to your QTH. You are further south and east than me and this different latitude, especially being south makes a difference, noticeable on other bands as well. When I go to the Algarve the propagation is totally different to my home qth which is about 1200 miles further north. The angle of arrival and signal capture by my vertical would be different to your loops, my capture would favour low angle arrival signals, whereas the loop might favour high angle so it could be that most of the signals are arriving at higher angles for the distance involved between the USA and Germany. When I use my E/W loop which is good to EU it is not as good to the West and this is maybe because the USA signals are much further away, and the angles of arrival would probably be different to those signals from EU. These are short time observations so far, it is complicated and would need more research. I am more interested in having QSO'S rather than delving into propagation research !! Because of my low noise QTH out in the countryside the vertical performs very well and I would expect it to be better than the smaller 80m loop on RX but like I said the vertical probably favours lower angle arrival signals especially at the distance involved from the USA even on 137 khz. Others might have a contribution or comment to make about our observations. 73 de Mal/G3KEV/IO94SH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
