As far as performance is concerned it doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference if the wires are separated at the ends or shorted together. However, if you are running a lot of power with a suburban sized antenna then the voltage on the antenna is very high. Corona at the ends of the wires can minimised by shorting the wires together.
