The simple answer is that the "impoverished schoolboy" obtained them for free by dismantling donated ex-govt. equipment together with many other components which in those days were of a size and robustness to withstand being re-used in a number of projects despite the soldering tool being of a type which needed heating over a flame from the gas stove!
