With winter rains however you may get a much wetter bottom (I could have phrased that better ) at the deep end of the wire - especially if it had a wide surface area at the bottom - old copper hot water tanks are good. Why more than one wire? a length of small-bore heating pipe would be better - you could pump water down it in summer. or keep it connected to bottom of a rain-barrel so whatever you collect in the rain barrel finds its way to the deep down copper tank electrode. Where do you get "a decent crossbow" ? I vaguely though they were illegal? My arm aches from throwing plastic milk bottles full of water over trees to the peril of my neighbours.
