and even the audio type of transformer were tested as choke on 2.048Mb/s PCM systems, but introduced 6dB loss, they are quite heavy, while only the difference between the to windings adds to the series inductivity of a balanced line

Very often such noise could be improved with a simple task, the first thing to try is connecting a bifilar wound choke where your telephone line enters the house. the next is to improve at your neighbours. Very often the balance is not what you might think

 

In the UK, the external line is supposed to be balanced, but the extension wiring inside the house is inherently unbalanced because it includes a third “ringing” wire (one of Dave Lauder’s favorite topics!)
