There is a lot of QRN/rain static about today and the vertical is a lot better than the loop. I suppose its to do with the direction of the rain front. So a loop is not necessarily a quiet antenna and better than a vertical. There are various factors to consider before making defined statements and you need both antennas available at the same time to make  comparisons.
