I thought a lot of the early operators on 73kHz (long before this new fangled high frequency 137kHz band arrived :-) came from the microwave bands where a knowledge of how to build your own equipment, to really and properly understand what you were actually doing, and carry out meaningful measurements is essential. The topbanders just followed along afterwards. I've returned to microwaves for now, but if anyone wants to conduct some serious experimentation into modern low bandwidth signalling techniques, get in touch privately and we'll take it from there.
