Back in the old days of Top Band (160M) mobile we base-loaded our 6ft (2M) whips with single- -layer coils and put 3 or 4 taps on each of the lower turns. The resulting Q was so high that opening the car door lowered the resonant frequency out of the band. Multi-layered coils were tried but were nowhere close to the single-layer performance. Merv.
