I think you have put your finger on it, we are having to go back to check our preconceptions. As far as earthing is concerned one of the base papers I have seen is one in the appendix of the RSGBs LF Experimenter's Handbook. The original paper dates back to about 1922, but it does explain some of the somewhat strange results that we have found when extending the top load an using different geometries. It goes some way to explaining why some 'gimicks' dont seem to work in some situations. Keep having fun!! Hope you get a shot at 136kHz soon.
