Reading Practical Wireless of June 2002 I came across the following item (conversion by OCR):

Laser Comms

David Bowman GOMRF and Allan Wyatt G8LSD have achieved a laser communication record with a c.w. QSO over 49.3km

David Bowman GOMRF and Allan Wyatt G8LSD have been conducting tests over
the last four months together with Derek Atter G3GRO and Lech Laszkiewicz G3KAU.............

Hello Dick.
A reasonably good report in PW, although I seemed to have gained an XYL from somewhere.
That was a busy week for Derek and me.  A few days previously I had returned from Scotland, and Derek and Jim M0BMU from Cornwall, where we had set a 2 way record for the 73kHz band at 610 km.
The  QSY to 447THz was a lot of fun. We had expected to use some LF technology in extending the laser distance. Laptops with ARGO and QRSS were at the ready, but as it turned out, whatever the distance we tried, the lasers were always the brightest lights on the horizon and our 'lightwave receivers' were overloaded.
One month after that on 5th May Derek, Allan and I managed a couple of QSOs between Dover and the French coast near Calais.  There's a photo of the laser over the 34km at:
