Just fill the rods in an stable tube of plastic material (fiber glass reinforced tube or PVC tube.

Aboot the relative permeability of an gapped mag circuit have a look to the amidon catalog (Amidon.de or just try ast Fair Rite, the manufacturer of amidon ferrites. Moreabout soft ferrites and mag. materials upon request.
