I can now charge 12V lead acid batteries for various experiments! - Cut some branches to get a better view to the south where the permanent WLAN link will be established. Now the 2.4 km path is quite good visible, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19882028/20140830_171125.jpg - While sitting in the tree i started my netbook, connected a USB WLAN stick, started inSSIDer software to check the signal levels of my WLAN access point (AP) and the channel usage. I bought 2 yagis, having "18 dBi gain" and directed them as good as possible. Without any problems i managed to get access to the AP in the first attempt! Signal levels over 2.4 km distance were up to -59 dBm which is quite a good SNR. Orientation of the antenna was not as critical as expected. Thus it appears to be most promising to achieve a reasonable data rate for the remote link, hopefully even during rain or snow. Next step will be a fixed installation of the antenna and SNR optimisation. BTW it is this type of antenna: http://www.amazon.de/WLAN-Antenne-Yagi-18dBi-Stecker/dp/B004RAH7OG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1409434866&sr=8-4&keywords=18+dbi+yagi Sorry, this is mostly OT but i know there are a few OMs interested in remote sites for VLF/LF/MF bands and this may be useful for them and so for us, if they will realise a similar project. 73, Stefan
