Had not heard that sound in years! At a former employer's site, we used to check calibration on a secondary frequency standard by simply injecting 100 kHz from a divider chain into a simple receiver. You could follow the resulting beat aurally, or with much greater accuracy, with the s-meter. If memory serves, this was back in the mid-1970's. When the dual-rated operation started from Nantucket, this simple approach was no longer possible.
