I understand that some excellent T/A conditions were experienced that night, with Finbar working a WE2 station and I believe Mal himself may have worked VE1ZZ also. I had to go to work for a night shift so missed the late night excitement. Closer to home, earlier in the evening, Finbar and I had a long QSO in which we repeated a previous QRP experiment (the one reported in this month's RadCom). This time Finbar was able to reduce TX power in stages down through 5W, 2.5W, 1W, 500mW, 200mW, 100mW, 50mW, 20mW and finally 10mW. At each step I could read his CW by ear and at several of them he sent a 4-figure number for me to verify. At the final level of 10mW (TX power!!) I took a few minutes, riding the QSB and piecing together fragments of CW from the noise, but finally got the 4 numbers correctly. This is a fantastic "miles per watt" even at 10mW. Imagine what the "miles per watts ERP" might be? Earlier in the QSO I'd had to break off for a few minutes and left my audio recorder running. I listened back to the file yesterday while driving and heard Dave G3YMC call Finbar! This is the first time I've heard Dave's 5mW ERP and it was readable by ear! Finbar failed to hear Dave's call though, which I'm sure is a disappointment to him, and to Dave. I don't know if this was a fleeting opening as no more was heard from Dave later in the evening. The conditions were superb, but it's only in hindsight that this becomes apparent, as they subside back to "normal" for a few days. Well done everyone concerned and let's hope for more.
