I am not using VAC, but I could install it anyway and see if I can repro= duce the error.

me too: after having freshly installed v.5, I went into settings to ch= ange the soundcard source, and thereafter the program terminated immed= iately with that same error message. I just kept trying and = the same happened a couple of times more. Then after the third attempt, it started up ok and never complained again. Friday ef= fect?
