I have made something acceptable to me by using a labler, a sort of up
market Dymo prints clear clean black letter on a thin white adhesive strip.
Not professional but workmanlike, and more long lasting than Dymo which
often bows and peels off. The white tape is a lot more expensive than Dymo
but might save a respray !!

Another suggestion was to design the panel on a PC drawing program.
Laser-print the output, scaling it to the exact size. Then laminate it and
stick the lamination to the metal panel.
Another option is a signmaking system that used to be available from RS
where you generate a negative and then print it to an adhesive coloured
metal foil. This is fairly rugged and will stand up to everyday wear and
tear. The process is a bit like photo printing a printed circuit board.

The transistor fault sounds a very odd one (I use to be in transistor
reliability !) Is it actually breaking-down (avalanching) or is the base
being pulled up to the collector voltage, in which case it may be a "pipe"
formed at a crystal imperfection, but they are not usually intermittant.
Interesting because the collector and base of a small transistor are on
opposite side of the die so a mechanical problem is usually ruled out.
