Check for dodgy DDS action by tuning to a heterodyne and rotating both bandwidth controls (bottom right). There should be no change in pitch or quality of the note. To really make it sing you need a CW filter in both IFs, but if you only have one, make it at 455kHz not 8.8MHz. The 455 filters are much better.
